Hamlin County, South Dakota
In 1873, Hamlin County came to be with about 538
square miles. Hamlin County is located between Watertown and
Brookings, South Dakota and has approximately 520 miles of highways with
three State Highways, one Federal Highway, one Interstate, and about
14 asphalt County Roads. Hamlin County is about 30 miles long east to
west and about 18 miles north to south. There are six incorporated
towns in the county (Bryant, Castlewood, Estelline, Hayti, Hazel,
and Lake Norden) with two towns not incorporated (Thomas and
Dempster). About 31 square miles (5.7%) of the county are
lakes, river, and creeks.
There are approximately 5,900 people
living in the county, but during the summer season the
population jumps to approximately 6,800, due to the increased
in lake population. The Sheriff's Office provides law
enforcement for all residents of Hamlin County and has contract
county law services
with Bryant, Castlewood, Hazel and Lake Norden. Estelline has it's own
department with one full-time and two part-time officers with the
city of Hayti having one part-time officer.

There are three schools throughout the county
providing education to the youth.
Hamlin School,
home of the chargers, is located about 4 miles west of Hayti and is the largest school
in the county. The school covers most of the central parts and
all of the western parts of Hamlin County.
Castlewood
School is home to the Castlewood Warriors and is
located within the city limits of Castlewood. The
school covers northeast, north-central, and south-central parts of the
county including Castlewood and Lake Poinsett areas. The Redman
call their home at the
Estelline
School, which is located within the city of Estelline. Estelline school covers southeast and
south-central parts of the county which includes Estelline,
Dempster and part of the Lake Poinsett areas.

Activities in Hamlin
County
Fishing is no problem in Hamlin County with the
number of lakes located in the county. There are many
different types of fish from Walleye, Northern Pike, Catfish, Perch,
and many more. Lake Poinsett, located in the south-central
part of the county, is the largest lake in the county and one of the
largest in the northeast region of South Dakota. Other lakes
are... Dry Lake (north of Poinsett), Lake Florence (south of
Castlewood), Lake Albert (west of Poinsett), Lake St. John, Lake
Mary, Lake Norden (northeast of the city of Lake Norden), Lake Marsh
(west of Hayti), Clear Lake (east of Thomas), and Five Ponds (north
of State Highway 22 and west of US Highway 81).
Hunting season brings a number of hunters to the
county during the fall and winter seasons. There are many different
types of wildlife located here from whitetail deer, pheasants,
geese, ducks and muskrats that populate the
county. If you also look close, you may find a coyote, fox,
eagle, or
turkey move or flying around in the prairie and rolling hills of
Hamlin County.

During the heart of winter,
you will find hundreds of snowmobiles taking part of the many
snowmobile trails and activities across the county.
After hard playing in the
lakes, fishing, snowmobiling or hunting activities... many
cities within the county have camping sites or hotels for visitors
