Hamlin County
In 1873, Hamlin County came to be with about 538 square miles. Hamlin
County is located between Watertown and Brookings, South Dakota. The county
has approximately 520 miles of highways with three State Highways, one
Federal Highway, one Interstate, and about 14 oiled County Roads. Hamlin
County is about 30 miles long east to west and about 18 miles north to
south. There are six incorporated towns in the county (Bryant, Castlewood,
Estelline, Hayti, Hazel, and Lake Norden) with two towns not incorporated
(Thomas and Dempster). About 31 square miles (5.7%) of the county
are lakes, river, and creeks.

There are approximately 5,650 people living in
the county, but during the summer season the population jumps to
approximately 6,500, due to the increased lake population in the summer. The
Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement for all residents of Hamlin County
and has contracts with Castlewood and Lake Norden to provide a number of
hours per month per city. Estelline has it's own department with one
full-time and one part-time employee. The Sheriff's Office and the Estelline
Police Department have a strong partnership and assist one another when
needed.

There are three schools throughout the county
providing education to the youth.
Hamlin School which is located about 4 miles west of Hayti is
the largest school. The school covers Hayti, Lake Norden,
Bryant, and Hazel. Hamlin School is home to the Chargers.
Castlewood School
is home to the Castlewood Warriors. The school is located
within the city limits of Castlewood on 4th Avenue. The school
covers northeast, north-central, and central parts of the county
including Castlewood and Lake Poinsett areas. The Redman
call their home at
Estelline School.
Estelline school covers southeast and south-central parts of the
county which includes Estelline and Dempster. The school is
located within the city of Estelline.

Hunting and Fishing
Fishing is no problem in Hamlin County with the number of lakes located in
the county. There are a number of different types of fish from
Walleye, Northern Pike, Catfish, Perch, and many more. Lake Poinsett,
located in the south-central part of the county and northwest end of
Brookings County, is the largest lake in the county. Other lakes are... Dry
Lake (north of Poinsett), Lake Florence (south of Castlewood), Lake Albert
(west of Poinsett), Lake St. John, Lake Mary, Lake Norden (northeast of the
city of Lake Norden), Lake Marsh (west of Hayti), Clear Lake (east of
Thomas), and Five Ponds (north of State Highway 22 and west of US Highway
81).

Hunting season brings a number of hunters to the county
during the fall and winter seasons. There are many different types of
wildlife located here with hundreds of deer, pheasants, geese, ducks, and
many more animals to populate the county. A group of state lands are located
in the county and are owned by the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks. There
are also private lands that hunters use during the hunting season. Remember
to ask the land owner before entering onto private lands.

911 Emergency
Depending on the location of the caller, 911 calls go to either
Watertown Police Department, Brookings Police Department, Clark County
Sheriff's Office, or Deuel County Sheriff's Office during an emergency in
Hamlin County. The 911 center will dispatch the fire department, ambulance,
and law enforcement to the emergency. Hayti, Hazel, Bryant, Lake
Norden, Castlewood, and Estelline all have voluntary fire departments.
Lake Norden, Castlewood, and Estelline have ambulance service as well.
Hamlin County, like the rest of the state of South Dakota, has 911 addresses
in the country (example: 46556 184th Street). These addresses help to locate
the emergency and direct emergency units to the location much faster.
