Sheriff's Report

December 31st to January 8th Reports

The following reports were incidents called into the Hamlin County Sheriff's Office and
do not count calls for the Estelline or Hayti Police Departments.  Please note, some incidents
called in may not be in this report and times are not always exact.  People that arrested by
law enforcement are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Dec. 31 at 3:00PM:  The sheriff’s office along with the Hazel Fire Department assisted the Lake Norden Ambulance on two medical calls throughout the afternoon.
Dec. 31 at 5:00PM:  Officers responded to about five vehicles in the ditch on many different roadways in Hamlin County throughout the evening.  No injuries and damage reported.
Dec. 31 at 6:00PM:  A caller advised she ran out of propane and was not able to contact the business where she gets the supplies.  An officer was sent to the scene.
Dec. 31 at 11:30PM:  A caller reported a female had come after her at a Castlewood business.  This incident remains under investigation and charges are pending for Simple Assault.
Dec. 31 at 11:50PM:  Dispatch received an abandoned 911 hang up call from a Lake Norden residence but later found out a child was playing with the phone.
New Year’s Day at 11:00AM:  An officer was dispatched to a one vehicle accident at the intersection of State Highway 28 and US Highway 81.  There was moderate damage to the vehicle and state highway signs.  No injuries reported.
New Year’s Day at 7:00PM:  A Bryant man was arrested for felony warrants out of South Dakota.
Jan. 2 at 6:15PM:  A 25 year old Dempster man was arrested for warrants out of South Dakota.
Jan. 3 at 6:00PM:  A caller advised there is a possible drunk male subject leaving the Motel in Hayti and was going to a business downtown.  A deputy was shortly on scene and was not able to locate the subject.
Jan. 4 at 2:15PM:  A motorist reported hitting a dog with his vehicle on State Highway 22 near Castlewood.
Jan. 4 at 3:00PM:  Sheriff Mack was sent to a two vehicle accident east of Thomas on 447th Avenue near 182nd Street.  No injuries reported.
Jan. 5 at 12:10PM:  Deputies along with the Clear Lake Ambulance, Clear Lake Fire Department and the Deuel County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a one vehicle injury accident near the Castlewood exit on Interstate 29.  The northbound lane was closed for about 30 minutes until the vehicle was removed.
Jan. 5 at 6:10PM:  A motorist reported hitting a deer a few miles north of Hazel causing moderate damage to the vehicle. 
Jan. 6 at 11:15AM:  Officers responded to a number of vehicles in the ditch around the Estelline area.  No damage or injuries reported.
Jan. 7 at 6:15AM:  A caller reported a person and a child were trapped in a rollover vehicle in the ditch near US Highway 81 just north of Kones Korner.  The Castlewood Fire Department and Ambulance were dispatched to the scene along with sheriff’s office.  The highway was shut down for about 20 minutes until crews could clear the scene.
Jan. 7 at 7:30AM:  A deputy was dispatched to Interstate 29 near the Castlewood Exit for a vehicle in the ditch.  No injuries.
Jan. 7 at 8:20AM:  A deputy was dispatched for a one vehicle rollover accident on State Highway 28 about five miles west of Lake Norden.  There was moderate damage to the vehicle with no injuries.
Jan. 7 at 5:50PM:  Officers were sent to a one vehicle that rolled in the ditch on County Road 446 about a mile north of Hamlin School.  There were no injuries reported but moderate damage was done to the vehicle.
Jan. 8 at 10:00AM:  A motorist reported hitting the Big Sioux River Bridge on State Highway 28 just outside of Estelline.  There were no injuries reported.
Jan. 8 at 10:30AM:  A Castlewood woman reported that she received a call that her debit card had expired and it was time to renew the card.  The caller advised her that they would need her card information before they could order the card.  The Castlewood woman did not give out her information.  If anyone has received this call, please call the Attorney General’s Consumer Helpline at 1-800-300-1986.
Jan. 8 at 1:30PM:  An officer along with the Castlewood Fire Department, were dispatched to the Castlewood Assisted Living for a fire alarm.  A caller called dispatch back and advised that a small child had pulled the fire alarm.
Jan. 8 at 4:30PM:  Dispatch found out that a person hit the emergency button on their cell phone and accidentally called 911.  Everything checked out okay and the incident happened in Bryant.
Jan. 8 at 7:50PM:  Officers came upon a vehicle stuck in the ditch along 2nd Avenue in Castlewood.  Traffic was stopped for a few minutes until the vehicle was pulled back onto the roadway.
Jan. 8 at 8:00PM:  The sheriff’s office was advised of an assault that took place in Castlewood.  The incident remains under investigation.
Jan. 8 at 8:40PM:  In rural Castlewood, an officer was dispatched for a 911 hang call.  An officer was on scene and found that a small child was playing with the phone.
