Sheriff's Report

August 14th to August 28th Reports

The following reports were incidents called into the Hamlin County Sheriff's Office and
do not count calls for the Estelline or Hayti Police Departments.  Please note, some incidents
called in may not be in this report and times are not always exact.  People that arrested by
law enforcement are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Aug. 14 at 2:15AM:  A person flagged down an officer in Castlewood and reported a possible sex assault that took place at a residence in town.  Charges are pending. 
     
  • Aug. 15 at 4:30PM:  The sheriff’s office was dispatched to a rural Castlewood home for a protection order issue.
     
  • Aug. 17 at 8:00AM:  A Watertown man reported that his duck boat was stolen from a location northeast for Thomas.  The duck boat was dark green and about 14 to 15 feet long.  A few days later after the report, someone reporting finding the boat northeast of Thomas. 
     
  • Aug. 17 at 5:00PM:  The Castlewood Fire Department and the sheriff’s office were dispatched to a semi on fire west of Castlewood.  No injuries reported.
     
  • Aug. 17 at 6:30PM:  The sheriff’s office was dispatched to Hayti for a stolen vehicle reported.  The vehicle was stopped on US Highway 81 and State Highway 21 intersection.  A juvenile has charges pending for Grand Theft and Ingesting of a Control Substance.
     
  • Aug. 18 at 11:30AM:  Castlewood Ambulance was requested to a residence in Castlewood for a medical emergency.  The sheriff’s office was also on scene.
     
  • Aug. 18 at 6:00PM:  Sheriff Mack and deputies were at a Lake Norden residence and arrested 34 year old Lake Norden man for three drug arrest warrants in South Dakota.  Also during the arrest, law enforcement found drug paraphernalia at the residence.  The 34 year old Lake Norden man as charges pending for possession of drug paraphernalia, felony protection order violation, Interfering with 911 service and possession of marijuana.    
     
  • Aug. 18 at 9:30PM:  A car vs deer accident happened on County Road 443 near County Road 183 (southeast of Hazel).  There was major damage to the vehicle and no injuries reported. 
     
  • Aug. 19 at 11:30AM:  A motorist reported donkeys out on County Road 188 near Hayti.  The owner of the donkeys was located. 
     
  • Aug. 19 at 2:00PM:  Sheriff Mack was called to residence in Castlewood for a neighbor dispute. 
     
  • Aug. 19 at 3:00PM:  A caller requested the Castlewood Ambulance to a residence in Castlewood for a medical emergency.  The Watertown Ambulance and the sheriff’s office were also on scene.
     
  • Aug. 19 at 3:45PM:  Officers were dispatched to a Castlewood residence for a welfare check.  Everything checked out okay.
     
  • Aug. 20 at 2:20PM:  A caller reported a suspicious vehicle in Bryant that was selling products to citizens.  The company was checked out and has the proper license and papers for South Dakota.
     
  • Aug. 20 at 4:00PM:  A Hayti citizen called the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office and advised that there was a meat salesman going door to door.   
  • Aug. 21 at 12:45PM:  Law enforcement was dispatched for a vehicle accident that took place on Highway 28 at Lake Poinsett.  A Lake Poinsett man has charges pending on the incident.
     
  • Aug. 21 at 7:00AM:  The sheriff’s office was dispatched to County Road 438 a few miles northeast of Bryant for a vehicle that was in the ditch.  There was minor damage to the vehicle and no injuries reported.
     
  • Aug. 21 at 10:00AM:  The sheriff’s office was advised of an animal complaint that took earlier that morning at Lake Poinsett.
     
  • Aug. 21 at 11:50AM:  A caller reported that someone drove into the ditch and did damage to his fence southeast of Vienna.   This incident remains under investigation.
     
  • Aug. 21 at 5:30PM:  The Castlewood Ambulance and the sheriff’s office were dispatched to a Castlewood business for a medical emergency. 
     
  • Aug. 21 at 10:00PM:  The Lake Norden Ambulance and the sheriff’s office were dispatched to a residence in Lake Norden for a medical call.
     
  • Aug. 22 at 12:15AM:  A motorist called 911 to report that the vehicle heading southbound on US Highway 81 was all over the roadway.  Officers were dispatched to the location to locate the vehicle.   
     
  • Aug. 22 at 8:30PM:  A caller reported that a male subject was yelling at another person in Castlewood.  The male subject left the residence and was advised not to return. 
     
  • Aug. 22 at 10:30PM:  The sheriff’s office and the Lake Norden Ambulance were dispatched to a motorcycle vs deer accident on County Road 438 southwest of Hazel.   The driver and passenger were taken up to the hospital for their injuries received in the accident.  The Clark County Sheriff’s Office and the Clark Ambulance were also on scene. 
     
  • Aug. 23 at 8:20PM:  Sheriff Mack was dispatched to a 911 hang up call at a Lake Poinsett business.  The business was checked out and everything was okay.
     
  • Aug. 23 at 6:00PM:  A motorist called 911 and reported cattle out on County Road 450 just north of Hayti.  The sheriff’s office called the owner and advised them about the cattle.
     
  • Aug. 23 at 9:15PM:  A traffic complaint was reported on Interstate 29 near the Codington/Hamlin County line.  Officers were out of position to intersect the vehicle.    
     
  • Aug. 24 at 7:00AM:  A two vehicle accident was reported at the intersection of State Highway 22 and County Road 459 in Castlewood.  One of the drivers has charges pending for Failure to Yield at an Intersection.   No injuries reported.
     
  • Aug. 24 at 9:00AM:  Law enforcement came upon a semi tractor/trailer that was stuck on the corner of the roadway in Lake Norden.  The officer helped with traffic control until the semi was off the roadway.
     
  • Aug. 24 at 6:45PM:  A Bryant man reported a suspicious person walking around State Highway 28 within the city limits.  Law enforcement came into contact with the person who was selling cleaning products around town.  The company and the person had the valid papers needed in South Dakota.   
     
  • Aug. 24 at 9:00PM:  A caller reported that a male subject in a vehicle was driving back and forth between Bryant and Lake Norden trying to get money from people for gasoline.  An officer was dispatched to the scene to locate the person.
        
  • Aug. 26 at 3:25PM:  The Castlewood Ambulance and the sheriff’s office were dispatched to a rural Castlewood address for a medical emergency.
     
  • Aug. 27 at 6:00AM:  The sheriff’s office was dispatched to a one vehicle rollover accident that occurred on County Road 438 northeast of Bryant.  There were no injuries reported but major damage was done to the vehicle.
     
  • Aug 27 at Noon:  The sheriff’s office was dispatched to Lake Norden for a 911 hang up call.  The call turned out that someone found a cell phone in the middle of the street and accidentally called 911.
     
  • Aug. 27 at 7:00PM:  A caller reported horse near the roadway northeast of Bryant.  Law enforcement contacted the owner and advised them about the incident.
     
  • Aug 28 at 5:45AM:  At a downtown Lake Norden business, a burglary was reported to the sheriff’s office.  The incident happened sometime during the night before and currently remains under investigation.  The current amount stolen from the business remains unknown, but it is to believe to be over $500.  Anyone that may have noticed any suspicious active downtown Lake Norden during Friday night or early Saturday morning is asked to call the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office.   
     
  • Aug. 28 at 8:30PM:  An investigation done by the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office resulted in a search warrant being conduct at a Hayti residence.  A 19 year old Hayti man was arrested and has charges pending for Felony Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Ingest of a Control Substance.  A 26 year old Hayti man was arrest and has charges pending for Possession of Marijuana, Distribution of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Ingest of a Control Substance.  The Estelline and Hayti Police Department also took part in the search warrant at the residence.
