Sheriff Dan T. Mack has been with the Hamlin County Sheriff's Office since 1976. He was a deputy sheriff with the department from 1976 until 1979 before he ran for Sheriff. He was elected into office the fall of 1979 and has held the position to this day. Sheriff Mack is a member of the South Dakota Sheriff's Association and was president during the year of 1986.  Sheriff Mack is also certified in HazMat Printing, does employment fingerprinting, civil fingerprinting, investigate crimes, investigate accidents, does office budget, works on execution of judgment and other law enforcement duties.   During his time off, Sheriff Mack likes to spend time fishing, camping, boating and being with family. 

Sheriff Mack and his wife, Louise, ran the sheriff’s office by themselves for many years.  Now, the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office has three full-time deputies with the help of two communities in the county, Lake Norden and Castlewood. Louise works as a secretary and dispatcher for the department and keeps police reports, civil papers, and other law enforcement items in order.  Louise has been working with the department since 1980. 

 

Chief Deputy Chad Schlotterbeck has been working in law enforcement for over 15 years and became a full-time deputy in 2001.  He became Chief Deputy in 2003 and remains at position at the Hamlin County Sheriff's Office. Before working for the sheriff's office, he was the police chief of the Castlewood Police Department and was the acting chief of the Estelline Police Department. Deputy Schlotterbeck also served in the US Air Force for many years before moving back to South Dakota.  Chief Deputy Schlotterbeck leads the department in criminal investigations, does sex offenders registrations, 24-7 program, traffic enforcement and work on many different projects within the department.

Deputy Jeremy Steffensen has been with the sheriff's office since summer of 2003. He worked at the Estelline Police Department before becoming a full-time deputy sheriff with the Hamlin County Sheriff's Office.  Deputy Steffensen works on civil/criminal papers, traffic enforcement and 24-7 program.  During his off time, Deputy Steffensen likes to fish, hunt and spend time with the family.  
 

Since 2005, Deputy Tayt Alexander has been a deputy sheriff with the Hamlin County Sheriff's Office. He got his Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement Technology at Western Dakota Technical Institute in Rapid City, South Dakota before becoming a deputy with the county. He was also an Explorer Captain and Lieutenant at the Brookings Police Department Explorer Post for about four years.  Deputy Alexander works on grants for the department, traffic enforcement, highway safety officer, NIBRS, criminal/traffic stats and many other project within the office.
